Welcome to the first installment of Vintage Cinema Rewind’s five-part retrospective on Blake and Michael’s Top 100 Favourite Films. There comes a time in every fledgling podcast’s life when they have to reckon with the big questions. How many times will Michael go off on a random tangent? How many times will Blake say “um”? How many pointless arguments will they refuse to edit out? And what represents our two cohost’s all-time favourite films? Will there be any crossovers? Or will this be the final nail in their respective coffins?

Pierrot le Fou (France - 1965) Deep Dive

Actor Month (mercifully?) concludes on Vintage Cinema Rewind. This week, Blake and Michael return with their Deep Dive on Jean-Luc Goddard’s eclectic little road-movie-that-could: Pierrot le Fou. As Blake and his new girlfriend settle into life on the lam, they begin to discover that perhaps they aren’t quite as compatible as they might have once imagined. And things are only complicated when Michael—a spurned lover and arms dealer—enters the picture, searching for his cache of guns. After being abandoned, Blake drifts around in search of this lost love. Can he find her before its too late? Or should he simply content himself by eating a massive cheese wheel?

Actor Month continues on Vintage Cinema Rewind. And for the next two weeks, Blake and Michael will be touring the French countryside in Jean-Luc Goddard's surreal road movie: Pierrot le Fou. Blake is a disgraced television executive trapped in an opulent life he never really wanted. But when a chance encounter with an old flame rekindles his passions, he decides to strike out across the world with her. What follows is a steady stream of robberies, terrible plays, and betrayals. Can he find whatever it is he was looking for? Or will this road movie simply spin out?

Alphaville (France - 1965) Deep Dive

Vintage Cinema Rewind is back Anna Karina's Actor Month! And their coverage of the the strangest, artiest sci-fi romp to ever grace the shadows of Paris continues. That's right, it's time for a Deep Dive on Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville! After Michael mysteriously (preposterously?) meets his end in the arms of a seductress, Blake is all alone in a city he doesn't understand. But with bizarre poolside executions and an even stranger voice in his head, can he unlock the secrets of this city? Or will he fail to protect those that weep?

It's August! You know what that means? Back to school shopping? No! A Canadian civic holiday? Surely not! Allergies? Nada. It's Actor Month! And this year, Vintage Cinema Rewinding is highlighting the iconic Danish and French queen of the silver screen: Anna Karina. And our first stop in the 2025 season takes us to Alphaville--a strange French dystopia ruled over by a sinister supercomputer. Blake is a cantankerous reporter searching for his latest scoop. But Michael--his erstwhile predecessor--has gone missing. Can Blake navigate this strange new world and find his friend? Or will he end up submerged in a chlorine-filled watery grave?

Cat City (1986 - Hungary) Deep Dive

Vintage Cinema Rewind continues their journey through a maze with no cheese at the end. Blake is making his way towards an ultimate weapon that will defeat the cats once and for all. Meanwhile, Michael is hoping to appease his boss by finally removing this thorn in their sides. But as planes crash and boats sink, it's anyone's guess where the chips will land. Can Blake free his people once and for all? Or is this the end of all mousekind?

Get ready for the strangest film you've ever seen. On this week's Vintage Cinema Rewind, Blake and Michael tackle the iconic Hungarian animated movie: Cat City. Blake is a secret agent dispatched to take down their feline overlords. Michael is a supervillain intent on stopping his adversary. And he'll use any tool he can get his hands (paws?) on. Corporate espionage. Rat gangsters. Numerous cases of copyright infringement. Can Blake defeat the evil cats? Or has he grabbed the tiger by the tail?

Things continue to deteriorate on Vintage Cinema Rewind's Deep Dive on David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. With Blake accepting a distant professor role and his girlfriend out of town on a shoot, Michael continues to spiral deeper and deeper into the warm embrace of drug addiction. Can Blake sober his better half up? Or is there another way for our erstwhile brothers to restore the balance?

Blake and Michael are twins who share everything: an apartment, a practice, and sometimes even partners. But when a famous actress with a strange medical condition takes an interest in Michael, their delicate equilibrium is disturbed. Can the twins return to each other? Or is their bond better severed?

As the clock ticks down and their time runs out, Blake and Michael commit their final hours to a Deep Dive of A Night to Remember. How does it resonate as a modern watch? How strong are the characters? And perhaps most significantly, how does it stack up against the much more beloved James Cameron version? Can they survive this ordeal? Or are our two hosts going down with the ship?

Stop us if you've heard this one before. The maiden voyage of the biggest ship ever constructed. A trip through iceberg-infested waters. People funneling to the lifeboats. Michael and Blake find themselves aboard the upper decks as the ship begins to sink. How will they cope with their predicament? Can they manage to save people? Or are their efforts all wet?

"These damn machines will be the death of us all some day!" It's a tale as old as time. Man versus Machine. Man versus Gravity. And Vintage Cinema Rewind versus the Airwaves. Blake and Jason (and Kelvin!) are back with a Deep Dive on the iconic Danish horror film: The Lift! As the elevator doors snap shut and darkness falls on our heroes, can they escape this coffin-shaped shoot in time? Or will they be mangled so thoroughly and so completely that all three of them will fit into a Danish pastry?

On this week's Vintage Cinema Rewind, Blake and Michael take a trip to the City of God: where divinity is in short supply. They meet all sorts of characters, including Rocket, a studious child with dreams of a better life, Li'l Zé, a young man with a precocious appetite for blood, and Benny, who is too kind and too charismatic for his particular line of work. Join them as they sit back and watch as all these different stories and lives unfurl around them. Can these characters escape their bleak and oppressive lives? Or will the beast finally devour them?

Things continue to unravel on Vintage Cinema Rewind's Deep Dive of City of God. As the streets run red with blood, powerful forces continue to conspire against each other. In one corner, we've got Li'l Dice: the city's most sadistic criminal. In the other corner we've got Knockout Ned: a reluctant crime lord. And somewhere between the two stands Rocket, armed only with his camera. Can the city survive this tumultuous gang war? Or are we all just chickens fleeing the knife?
