But despite an inspired new arrival (and even a trip abroad!) they continue to meet misfortune on all sides. Can they finally part Hitler's grip around their homeland? The revolution continues on Vintage Cinema Rewind. This week, Blake and Michael are back with their Deep Dive on the recently-trending The Battle of Algiers! As the hunt for Blake continues, the people of Algeria find themselves caught in a hail of gunfire. But as Michael narrows in on his target, Blake takes a moment to question both his methods and the true impact of violence upon the native populace. And with his own execution drawing near and the rebels truly find a better way, can the residents of Algeria find a better way? Or will their home become little more than a barrow?

Vintage Cinema Rewind is back with yet another classic of international cinema! This week, they're covering The Battle of Algiers, the iconic docudrama that was referenced in Paul Thomas Anderson's acclaimed One Battle After Another. As the iron grip of colonialism tightens around Algeria, Blake--a young street thug--is drafted into the rebellion. But as the city around them becomes a scarred mess of cinder and barbed wire, are they truly helping the native populace? And when Michael--a French commander--is brought in to sniff out the freedom fighters, can they still win the hearts and minds of their people? Or will they end up forced back into the shadows?

The Sweet Hereafter (Canada - 1997) Deep Dive

There are no accidents on Vintage Cinema Rewind. Things continue to devolve on this week's Deep Dive on Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter. As the trial date approaches, Blake subpoenas the grieving Michael. But when he turns to his neighbours for help, his pleas fall on deaf ears. Will the citizens of Sam Dent receive their lucrative payout? Or will the Pied Piper have his vengeance?

Videodrome (Canada - 1983) Deep Dive

Things get... stranger on Vintage Cinema Rewind. On this week's Deep Dive into David Cronenberg's Videodrome, Blake has fallen into the clutches of a sinister optician (no, really). But after sticking his head in a (presumably radioactive) helmet and realizing that Michael has betrayed him, he sets out to settle score. Can he assimilate with the new flesh? Or will he end up floating in the Humber River?

As Blake and his new girlfriend settle into life on the lam, they begin to discover that perhaps they aren’t quite as compatible as they might have once imagined. And things are only complicated when Michael—a spurned lover and arms dealer—enters the picture, searching for his cache of guns. After being abandoned, Blake drifts around in search of this lost love. Can he find her before its too late? Or should he simply content himself by eating a massive cheese wheel?

But when a chance encounter with an old flame rekindles his passions, he decides to strike out across the world with her. What follows is a steady stream of robberies, terrible plays, and betrayals. Can he find whatever it is he was looking for? Or will this road movie simply spin out?

Vintage Cinema Rewind is back Anna Karina's Actor Month! And their coverage of the the strangest, artiest sci-fi romp to ever grace the shadows of Paris continues. That's right, it's time for a Deep Dive on Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville! After Michael mysteriously (preposterously?) meets his end in the arms of a seductress, Blake is all alone in a city he doesn't understand. But with bizarre poolside executions and an even stranger voice in his head, can he unlock the secrets of this city? Or will he fail to protect those that weep?

And this year, Vintage Cinema Rewinding is highlighting the iconic Danish and French queen of the silver screen: Anna Karina. And our first stop in the 2025 season takes us to Alphaville--a strange French dystopia ruled over by a sinister supercomputer. Blake is a cantankerous reporter searching for his latest scoop. But Michael--his erstwhile predecessor--has gone missing. Can Blake navigate this strange new world and find his friend? Or will he end up submerged in a chlorine-filled watery grave?
